There are two main ways that coastal cattle ranchers make their living: by keeping a herd for breeding or by seasonally grazing young cattle.

The first option is known as the “cow-calf” method, in which female heifers are bred with male bulls to produce calves.

The second option is called the “stocker” method, in which young cattle are bought and kept for a single season.

Jered Lawson runs Pie Ranch, a farm and environmental education center, and has worked with POST to buy land for his farm.

Lawson believes that open space organizations and agriculture are mutually beneficial in an area where land is scarce and valuable.

“Farmers don’t need to own their properties when they can get long-term ground leases,” he said.
